The Haast area is a collection of tiny communities including Haast township, Haast Junction and Haast Beach, all close to the main highway SH6. Haast is a 142 km (2 hr) drive from Wanaka, and 119 km (1.5 hr) drive south of Fox Glacier township. Jackson Bay is at the end of the coastal road, an easy 32 km (30 min) scenic drive from Haast.

The Blue Pools Track is located in Haast Pass, between Haast and Wanaka. It's a lovely wooded bridge trail in the forest and then a long swing bridge to cross over before getting to the blue pools. The Haast Blue Pools are the one spot along the Haast Pass where you will come across crowds. At just over an hour's drive from Wanaka, and 2 from Queenstown, the Blue Pools are part of every tour itinerary in the region and the car park is filled with buses and cars, and the track, while never crowded, is a constant procession of people walking to and from the pools.
