The Beacon Lighthouse Reserve is in effect preserving the still-operating lighthouse at Point Cartwright, but is also a nature reserve. The endangered species of butterfly, the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly used to be prolific from as far south as Grafton in New South Wales and all the way north to Maryborough in Queensland. The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly is one of Australia's largest.

The Point Cartwright Lighthouse was automated in late 1978 and officially opened on September 10, 1979 by the then Federal Transport Minister, Mr Nixon. The lighthouse is a reinforced concrete pentagonal tower surmounted by a concrete lantern. It has a total height of 32.4 metres and was built at a cost of $221,000 and is unmanned.

An easy walk around the Port Cartwright Reserve, in the Sunshine Coast region of Queensland, near Maroochydoore. The walk starts at La Balsa carpark and loops out to and around the lighthouse via the coastal path and on the way back runs along the river. A beautiful track with toilets, drinking water, shaded sections, and beautiful views over the ocean and the river.
