Museum patrons learn about the perils of maritime transport on the Great Lakes at the Whitefish Point Light Station, an historic site on the National Register of Historic Places. We are also home of the Whitefish Point Light Tower, which has been in continuous operation since 1861, making it the oldest operating lighthouse on Lake Superior.

After ongoing search efforts, the ship was discovered on May 20, 1976. The wreck was found resting about 160 meters below Superior's surface, upside down on the bottom of the lake. It was 27 kilometers from Whitefish Bay, near Sault Ste. Marie. The location of the Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck.

Whitefish Point marks the eastern end of a notorious 80-mile stretch of shoreline from here west to Munising, Michigan, known ominously as Lake Superior's Shipwreck Coast. Of the 550 known major shipwrecks lying on the bottom of the lake, at least 200 of them are in the vicinity of Whitefish Point.

Rossport, Ontario. Located 5.7 miles (9.3 km) from Rossport, Battle Island Lighthouse was established to guide boats coming in from Lake Superior through Simpson Channel, into Nipigon Bay. The original lighthouse, built in 1871, was replaced in 1911. The grounds are open to the public, but the tower is closed.

The light station at Whitefish Point was established in 1849 and is the oldest operating lighthouse on Lake Superior. The area was an early stopping place for Native Americans, Voyageurs, Coureur des bois and Jesuit missionaries as they navigated the wild Great Lakes coasts.

Whitefish Bay is a large bay on the eastern end of Lake Superior between Michigan, United States, and Ontario, Canada. The international border runs through the bay, which is heavily used by shipping traffic northbound from and southbound to the Soo Locks.

General Information Directions: To get to the shore, travel south from Sault Ste. Marie along the Mackinac Trail (H-63). Follow 6 mile Road west to Brimley State Park, where Lake Shore Drive begins its course along the bay.
