The El Dorado movie featured Olaf's paintings as backdrops during the credits. Many people have been introduced to Olaf Wieghorst's art by these paintings. Olaf began pencil sketching early. At eight years old he drew on every piece of paper he could find. Horses were his favorite subject. Olaf's father - an artist in his own right - encouraged his son. And young Olaf took up a paint brush for a time. He sold his first painting - a reproduction from a postcard - at age twelve.

At 14, too tall to work under the moniker, he left the entertainment world to work on a stock farm where he honed his riding skills and started to paint. In 1918, he traveled to New York and made his way west by enlisting in the U.S. Cavalry.
