The lighthouse entered service in 1898. In 1981 the original was replaced by a new lighthouse. It is situated on the headland which is also the location for the Virgen de la Barca sanctuary and the famous "pedra de abalar" - rocking or logan stones, the main focus of the Fiesta de la Virgen de la Barca, and the "pedra dos cadrís".
