The Christian basilica is located in the eastern part of a small islet known as Illa del Rei, in the center of the port of Maò (Menorca). At the end of the 19th century, a mosaic was discovered. M.L. Serra excavated the site in the 60's of the 20th century revealing the presence of a church covered by mosaics, several rooms, a stybadium.

In 1993 the Illa del Rei was declared a biosphere reserve because, among other things, the island is the only habitat of Podarcis lilfordi balearica, an endemic subspecies of the Lilford's wall lizard (Podarcis lilfordi) from the family of the real lizards (Lacertidae).

Contemporary culture rises from the rubble at Menorca’s magical Illa del Rei home to Hauser
The restoration and revitalization of Illa del Rei is the result of a fruitful collaboration between Fundació de l'Hospital de l'Illa del Rei, established in 2004 by local volunteers, who restored the naval hospital and turned it into a museum, and Hauser & Wirth—joining them to restore and sensitively repurpose the Langara outbuildings.
