Fish maw is more affordable than shark's fin and bird nest. However, it is not inexpensive. It is divided into two grades. Yu Piu (魚鰾) is the lower grade which you can get for about RM 30 for a hundred grams. Whereas the higher grade Fa Gau (花膠) can cost RM 300 for the same weight! This piece of fish maw (Fa Gau/花膠 ) costs RM 400+!

Instructions. Soak fish maw in a large basin of cold water until soft. Remove, cut into 2½cm (1 in) cubes and rinse. Mix prawn meatball ingredients together and chill for 30 minutes then divide into small portions, about 20- 25. Get Recipe. When buying fish maw, go for higher grade ones without the "greasy stink" though I know some people actually like this smell. Soaking the fish maw in hot water until softened then squeezing out the liquid and repeating this process help greatly to remove the smell. My favourite are threadfin fish maw which is soft without weird.
