La "nouvelle forêt" fut plantée par Guillaume le Conquérant en 1066 et était, dès lors, considérée comme forêt royale. Elle était alors utilisée comme réserve de chasse royale et lieu de pâturage pour les chevaux. Ce gigantesque parc est aujourd'hui encore, bien que très touristique, l'habitat naturel des poneys portant son nom.

Colours & characteristics. You can get a chestnut New Forest pony, or one in bay, grey or brown. Piebald and skewbald creatures are not classed as New Forest ponies. The maximum height for an animal is 148 centimetres, or around 14.5 hands. While there's no minimum height, most will be about 122 centimetres tall - or 12 hands.

The first recorded mention of the New Forest was on a shard of English pottery that dates back to the 1st century AD. Unfortunately since then records of them have been spotty and poorly maintained, however they remain known for their supreme strength & sure-footedness. Le New Forest est l'une des races reconnues de poneys dites des montagnes et des landes, originaires des îles Britanniques. La race est indigène du sud-ouest du Hampshire, dans la région du New Forest dont elle tire son nom. Les études ADN l'ont révélé très proche des poneys celtes du type Asturcón et Pottok.
