La prison Saint Paul, construite entre 1860 et 1865 par Antonin Louvier, architecte départemental du Rhône, est organisée sur un système panoptique de 6 bâtiments rayonnant autour d'une rotonde centrale de surveillance surmontée d'une chapelle. Elle est construite entièrement en pierres de taille (pierre dorée du Lyonnais et pierre de Villebois).
