G-Shaft candy originated in Braidwood, Illinois in the late 1800's. Harriet and William Williamson came to Braidwood in 1872, where William worked as a hoisting engineer at the Chicago & Wilmington Coal Company's "I" shaft. Tragedy struck in September of 1881 when William died from injuries sustained when the engine house roof collapsed.

Remembering the popularity of her "Bull's-Eye" candy, Mrs. Williamson began her candy-making business. Enlisting the help of the children, she made and distributed the candy to local merchants in Braidwood, Illinois and surrounding communities. She named the confection "G-Shaft" Candy, because that mine was visible from her kitchen window.
