Miura developed the Berserk Prototype in 1988 while still in college. He'd also already had a couple of published manga under his belt. In fact, the prototype came at a time after another of Miura's manga had failed. Noa, was another manga series Miura created prior to the prototype and it was being published for a bit in Weekly Shonen Magazine.

11 Azurepark • 8 yr. ago • Edited 8 yr. ago The prototype is basically a mothballed first draft of Berserk. It's fun to read, but you should not mistake it as part of the story of Berserk proper. The real beginning of Berserk is volume 1 of the manga. P.S., it's okay to have started with the anime.

I like it, a lot. It's a lot less complex, dark, and oppressive than Berserk as we know it now, but there's still a lot of qualities there that I enjoy. I think I would have kept reading if it went in that direction, though I think the direction Miura ultimately went in was for the best. It's pretty neat and I still go back to it from time to time.

Miura first premiered Berserk in 1988 with a 48-page prototype, which won a prize at the Comi Manga School where he was enrolled at the time. It is the very first chapter of Berserk, only this one was just a concept of what Berserk would be. Supposedly Miura drew this while he was still in college. I'm reading it right now and thought that some people may have missed it aswell.
