It was available as a saloon, coupé, cabriolet, estate and utility estate, known as the glass estate. The PËUGEOT 304 aimed to occupy the medium-sized segment, and kept the technical base of the PEUGEOT 204.

The engine The 304 was launched with an all alloy SOHC four-cylinder 1,288 cc petrol engine (XL3), directly derived from the 1130 cc XK3 engine fitted to the earlier 204. A more powerful S version of the engine, sporting a twin choke/twin barrel carburettor (XL3S), became an option on the coupé and cabriolet in March 1972. [6]

Peugeot made the Pininfarina-styled 304 range from 1969 to 1980, but the convertible version only from 1970 to 1975. Of the 19,000 or so open 304s, just 836 were right-hand drive, UK-bound examples.

Peugeot revealed the new 304 in 1969, based on the 204 platform but with larger engines and 504-inspired front and rear styling. The 204 stayed on as a more humble cut-price saloon and estate, but coupé and cabriolet were updated to 304 spec from 1970. At this point the 304 Cabriolet was officially imported into the UK with right-hand drive.
