Zeeland-Flanders was part of the County of Flanders until 1600. It was subsequently ruled by the States General of the Dutch Republic until 1795. In July 1814, Zeeland-Flanders became part of the province of Zeeland. The former islands of Terneuzen, Zaamslag and Axel were now controlled by Middelburg. This gave the region its Calvinist.

What used to be a muddy landscape, flooding at high tide and reappearing at low tide, became a series of small man-made hills that stayed dry at all times.
