Marlborough House Garden was built as a town mansion by Sir Christopher Wren, and still possesses much of the extent and layout of its original garden. It was commissioned by the first Duke of Marlborough but the idea for a town house was that of Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, who secured the lease of the site from Queen Anne.

The Duchess of Marlborough's legacy continues in the steeply terraced walled garden, known as the Duchess's Garden, which skilfully links the house and garden with the rising landscape beyond. Today's owners have planted the different levels of the terrace with box parterre, clipped box balls and luxurious borders filled with penstemons.

Hide Ad. One large private estate which was sold in 1920 was the Marlborough estate, the entrance to which was gained from Halifax Road. Marlborough House is still standing, as are six large detached houses which were part of the estate. The five acres of land on which it stood would later become part of Batley Carr Park and bowling green.

Marlborough House (listed Grade I), known since the late-C20 as C-House, stands at the far south-east end of the entrance courtyard. It is constructed of brick and has a hipped roof. Both the north-west and the south-east facades have fifteen bays, with the three central bays recessed.

Marlborough Gardens is a post war housing estate built in the late 1940's and early 50's. Together with Folly View Road at the top end, which was built later in the 60's, it now forms a new link road that connects Park Road to Fernham Road. Marlborough House on Pall Mall in London is the international headquarters of the Commonwealth Secretariat and Commonwealth Foundation. The house was built for Sarah Churchill, first Duchess of Marlborough, and was completed in 1711. It later became a Royal Palace and over the centuries Dowager Queens, Princes, Dukes and Duchesses have stayed.

Visitors to Marlborough House can also see Queen Mary's thatched revolving summer house and the Royal pet cemetery of Queen Alexandra.
