Yes, the blue discs are CDs. Some PS2 games which came on CDs (Contra: Shattered Soldier) were famous for being unreadable on many PS2s.

Black discs (actually dark purple) are PS1 discs. Blue discs are PS2 CD-ROMs, and were released all through the life of the system if a game was 700 MB or less. Silver discs are DVD-ROM (single layer), and gold discs are DVD-ROM (dual layer). The PS2 optical drive has 2 lasers, one for CD and one for DVD.

Both of my fat PS2s read both types of discs, no problems. If it makes a difference, I run them in low dust, low humidity environments. My fat ps2 takes 3 minutes to read reg ps2 discs, iffy on others. Slim ps2, I only have 1 blue disc, thats nba live 2002 I think, never play it, so dont care.

Re: My PS2 won\'t play discs with purple backs?!? Basically, it'll play all the DVD games but not the regular CD games. You could take it apart and clean it, but that would void the warranty if you still have one. A person from work had a similar problem, but his PS2 wouldn't read either (CD and DVD).

It is just blue discs that it won't read; everything else is fine. The PS2 laser assembly basically has 2 lasers in one. You have 2 potentiometers on it to control the intensity of the lasers you can turn with a tiny screwdriver. You can turn up the power for the CD laser just a bit as to not burn it out.
