Well, we have to be realistic about the ability to fill pits. Consider that a hair is approximately 50µm in diameter and that bluing adds only 2µm at a time. Assume that it takes 5 applications of rust bluing to build it up to 2µm, it would take a total of 125 rust blue applications to fill a pit the same diameter as a human hair!

My first attempt at rust bluing
Rust bluing is done by boiling the parts in pure water, removing them and swabbing them with a chemical that causes the parts to rust. The rust is "carded" off with degreased steel wool, then put back in the water. Each time the rust formed by the chemical is carded off, the blue color gets deeper.

You need to heat the Peroxide in the microwave for a few seconds, then dissolve the salt, then add the vinegar. The heat is supposed to help dissolve the salt. So far I have done hot blue. all kinds of cold blue.. steam pipe rust & box rust blue . It all comes down to the prep work you put into it .

A. Try any recipe for black finish on steel; after that you can use phosphating and then clearcoat it. You can use black phosphating too (combined with clearcoat).. I second John Gellatly's slow rust bluing formula, i.e., 3 parts nitric acid, 2 parts hydrochloric acid, as much iron as it will dissolve and after cessation of the reaction.

Bluing is FeO3 or rust with an extra oxygen molecule. This conversion happens as part of the chemical reaction to the rusting agent in the boiling tank. I'm not a chemist by any means, so I'm sure there's a lot more to it than that. But I think you can get the gist.
