This article analyzes the ideas of the Turkish sociologist and political activist Ziya Gökalp (1876-1924) in order to reevaluate the secularization politics of the Young Turks. A close reading of Gökalp's publications on Islamic institutional reform challenges homogenizing modernist interpretations of late Ottoman reform in general.
