For long it was "believed" that the Sam Barris 1949 Mercury was the first Chopped Mercury out there. Sam had chopped his own personal car in his spare time. It was said he had bought the car brand new and started working on it a few weeks after he got it.

I know Gene is still around. Both bodies were chopped 51's if I remember right. If you can find an old copy of a yearly book called the "super catalog of kit.
