The 1920s. During this era, the term "bathing suit" gave way to "swimming suits" as Portland swimwear company Jantzen coined the term to represent the sleeker silhouettes of its suits. These tank suits were made from ribbed Jersey and were form-fitting. The shorts worn underneath the tunics were shorter than they had been in the past.
